Women in Education
There are so many different education options in the United States today that it can be a blur when looking through the pamphlets of information and school websites. At HY International, we help students and their families look through desired schools based on location, ranking, program interest, and much more.
Recently, we’ve talked to admissions directors and representatives at all girls high schools and women’s colleges to get a deeper look at what the benefits of an all women’s education means in the United States.
Research has shown that young girls and women in a single-sex environment are more confident in the academics, especially in STEM. Studies have shown that women tend to stay in their majors, often continue into PhD programs, and build strong communication and leadership skills. Statistics from the Women’s College Coalition show that 90% of women’s college presidents are women, majoring in pre-med is 1.5 times more likely at a women’s college, and often become many of the “firsts” such as the first woman Nobel Peace Prize recipient..
Education in a single-sex environment is providing an environment for girls and women to foster their leadership ability and academic goals. We see notable women such as Madeleine Albright, first woman secretary of state, artist Georgia O’Keefe, and chef and author Julia Child graduating from an all girls high school or women’s college. An all girls’ school and women’s college allow students to find their voice and foster their potential in present day society.
